The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

The bans were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
