Individuals Stopping Slimming Jabs Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who stop using popular weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing these medications must be cognizant of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a reversion to original weight in about 18 months.

Weighing Therapies

The study, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically see a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Experts believe the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the heightened weight return.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Condition?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

People who have stopped the medication report a powerful return of appetite.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Use

Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts caution that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
