An underground market for unapproved slimming drugs is propelled by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on communication apps, according to new investigations.

The experimental drug, which remains in research studies, is being advertised by social media influencers for its supposed fat-burning properties. Followers are encouraged to message these accounts directly for supplier links, while also receiving promotional offers.

Active Commerce on Messaging Platforms

Separately, a flourishing market exists on Telegram, where groups with thousands of members share “before and after” photos, administration instructions and assertions of rapid UK delivery. Vendors market the substance there before directing buyers to WhatsApp for transactions.

Understanding Retatrutide

This medication is an investigational injection created by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The treatment targets three intestinal hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, GIP and glucagon. Preliminary studies suggest it could help individuals lose up to a quarter of their body weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the drug is being hailed online as the next Ozempic.

Medical Professionals Voice Concerns

However, doctors and pharmacists have warned that the distribution of what is still an unapproved drug in the United Kingdom is worrisome and could lead to users injecting substances of unknown origin.

Several influencers try to circumvent the regulations by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a controlled substance, but promotion and supply can still breach pharmaceutical, marketing, and customer laws, risking fines, prosecution or prison.

Platform Reaction and Material Removal

According to the social media company, the service has taken down problematic material and prohibited related keywords and search suggestions. The company stated it was dedicated to keeping the platform secure and allocating resources in enhancing compliance measures.

Research also found groups with up to 9,000 members selling retatrutide using Telegram's integrated search feature, which operates like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” instantly displays channels with numerous of users, filled with images of weight loss, positive reviews and step-by-step guides for mixing or administering at home.

After minutes of entering one group, a vendor posted contact information, where most transactions occur. The vendor sent an instruction manual and guaranteed shipping within 48 hours. When asked whether the substance was authentic, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a image of a alleged laboratory certificate. Not one asked about body mass, health issues or past usage.

Product Details and Costs

Within these groups, posts show black plastic parcels with postal service stickers, claiming to contain fresh supplies. One message read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can choose between dry substance containers, prepared at home with purified liquid, or pre-filled injectors usually priced at 160 pounds for 20mg. When asked how long a pen should last, vendors give conflicting responses varying between a several days to “depends on your body”.
