Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments from captain Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered those words in several conversations following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at defeat with a match to spare, the captain noted he had let his message to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

However, following Crawley made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment after England suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently went on a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, Stokes said his players had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the guidance from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their previous three years in charge.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional target of 435 runs.

This means, Australia need just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an unassailable three-nil lead with three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in just eleven days of cricket – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a formidable side. It was inevitably hard coming here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's innings in Adelaide likely secures questions about his immediate future in the side, Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, extending his poor record versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk from the outside. There's no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he concluded.
